NoteStructural optimization is a term coined in the year 1960 by L. A. Schmit. Structural optimization combines nonlinear numerical optimization techniques (from operations research) with finite element analysis to achive an optimal mechanical design. The finite element analysis is used to calculate the goodness (such as life time costs) of a design option. Nonlinear numerical optimization is used to find the optimal design out of a large number of design options. (see also Garret N. Vanderplaats, 'Structural Optimization for Statics, Dynamics and Beyond' presented at the International Symposium on Dynamic Problems of Mechanics, 2005).
